Youth Centre Opening InvitationFriday 25th August 1pm

Youth Centre:  Grand Opening

The Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre and project partner Youth Justice are very excited about the Grand Opening of the Reconnect Youth Centre which will take place on Friday 25th August 2017. The Reconnect Youth Centre has been set up over the last 8 months with funding for the project coming from generous community donors/ groups and businesses including Hervey Bay Rotary Sunrise, Bunnings, Stockland Shopping Centre and Cottonwood Projects. A number of youth from the Transition 2 Success construction course also helped with constructing training rooms inside the facility.

The Reconnect Youth Centre has been set up to have a focus on providing training and employment pathways for disadvantaged youth. The Youth Centre will engage young people to be innovative and also develop social enterprises to support them to achieve their goals.

The Centre will work under the Multiple Intelligence framework that not every young person has to be Maths or English ‘smart’, there are other intelligences that may be a young person’s strength. In addition to this focus, the Youth Centre is also the office base for the Youth Mentoring Program, Reconnect Youth Homelessness Service, Impact Youth Employment First Aid and Youth Justice’s Transition 2 Success Program.

The Grand Opening promises to be an exciting event with all youth organisations/ services, schools in the area invited to attend as well as Mr Ted Sorensen, State Member of Parliament performing the official opening.

constanceSaturday 26th 2.00pm: Film Screening

Constance on the Edge:  M (Mature) aged 15 years and over.

One family. Two wars. Three countries. What does it take to forge a new life far from home?
Filmed over 10 years, Constance on the Edge is an unflinchingly honest portrayal of one refugee family’s resettlement story in Australia.

Brave, lion-hearted, charismatic Constance, mother of 6, confronts her painful past in war-torn Sudan, and risks everything in Australia so her family can thrive.

Mary, Constance’s niece, finds it impossible to find a job. Vicky, her daughter, studies every morning from 4am, hoping to get into university. Charles, 23, is struggling with alienation and depression.

Constance on the Edge gets to the heart of a contemporary untold story about the courage and resilience it takes to build new lives. The film also highlights the important role communities play in encouraging a sense of welcoming, healing and belonging.
