PWYK Page 1Play With Your Kids

Play With Your Kids is a program managed by the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre and funded by the Department of Education, Training and Employment. Qualified staff work together to provide you and your children with opportunities to learn through play in a safe and supportive environment.

The objectives of the program are:

  • To work in partnership with parents by facilitating playgroups that provide a variety of play experiences and activities that support the physical, emotional and social development of children from birth to prep.
  • To provide parenting information and support to parents on a variety of issues and needs.
  • Foster opportunities for parents to  develop valuable social networks with other families

The PWYK Program is part of the Child and Family HUB Service for the Fraser Coast, within this role the service offers a large variety of family support including parenting support and child health support and utilises the opportunities to network and refer to other community services when needed.

What do we do?  We support families, many who have no relatives in Hervey Bay and a large percent have partners who are FIFO. Play experiences are based on children's needs and include activities such as art, sand play, reading, music, dance, sensory activities, water play and construction.

Parent Information

It can be very difficult for parents to get to workshops and to have the time to research information. In this section we hope to inform parents on subjects that can make parenting a pleasure rather than a chore. If there is anything that you want more information about please email the program co-ordinator with your requests.

Learning to be Creative

Creativity is a child's way of expressing ideas, thoughts and feelings. By accepting their ideas and the things they make, you are encouraging them to explore, take risks and have a go.

Some ideas to develop creativity in your child:

  • Challenge children to make use of each of their senses and encourage them to become open and aware.
  • Challenge children to experiment with new and different materials.
  • Challenge children to create with their body and try new ways of self-expression.
  • Encourage them to sing and dance.
  • Provide boxes and dress-ups for pretend play.
  • Provide paper, paint and playdough.
  • Collect bits and pieces such as leaves, feathers, paper and fabric for making things and then display what they make.
