CAMS Page 1Community Action Multicultural Service (CAMS)

The CAMS program supports the multicultural community to:

  • Have equitable access to services and programs that respond appropriately to their needs.
  • To fully participate in and benefit from all aspects of life in Queensland
  • To feel a sense of belonging in a cohesive and harmonious community.

This program strives to ensure that the Hervey Bay Multicultural Community:

  • Feel a sense of belonging and have opportunities to socialise
  • Have information and access to local services
  • Participate in community life!

Culture Caf

The monthly Culture Caf showcases a particular culture at each event, offering a taste treat of their cuisine, entertainment and information about their history. This event promotes social inclusion, community cohesion and racial understanding. Culture Caf provides an opportunity to welcome new people to the area, new migrants to Australia and socially isolated people in our community. Come along to an enjoyable cafe in the heart of our town in the Community Centre.  A small entry is requested.

Conversational English

These free classes are available for adults of the non-English speaking background community of Hervey Bay.  Volunteer tutors assist them to gain an understanding of, and to speak basic English. Participants learn practical skills such as grocery shopping, completing Centrelink and banking forms, as well as reading recipes and bus timetables. From time to time guest speakers are invited to the class to inform the participants about local services.

Racism. It Stops with Me

This group is led by a volunteer who facilitates regular meeting to discuss community concerns and issues in regard to this topic. If you feel passionate about working towards a harmonious and accepting community, please call 4194 3000 for the next meeting date. All meeting are held at the Community Centre.

CAMS Friday Garden Club

Awareness of Domestic and Family Violence

CAMS works with migrants to ensure that they are aware of what constitutes domestic and family violence and where to seek help.

Diversity Lunches

These are held in a different café or restaurant every few months. The idea of the gathering is to taste the local cultural cuisine, to meet new people and keep informed about what is going on in the community – in particular in the multicultural community.

Dancing Queens

The last Thursday of the month female migrants gather at the Hervey Bay Boat Club from 1-2.30pm to learn from others on the dance floor the latest moves. It is a free session with lots of laughs!
